What Can You Discover Here?
One of the best ways to experience Monte Cofano is to follow its scenic coastal trail, known as Sentiero del Mare.
Along the way, you'll encounter beautiful turquoise waters, small rocky coves, Mediterranean vegetation, and two historic watchtowers.
One of them, Torre della Tonnara di Cofano, has an extraordinary four-pointed star shape. Built in the 16th century, its unusual concave walls may have been designed to deflect cannonballs fired by enemy ships!
The nearby Torre di San Giovanni once formed part of Sicily's coastal defence system.
A Cave With Prehistoric Secrets
Hidden among the cliffs is Grotta del Crocifisso, a cave where archaeologists discovered evidence of prehistoric human activity, including stone tools and animal remains dating back thousands of years.
Even more surprisingly, the mountain itself was formed from ancient marine limestone deposits, some dating back more than 200 million years. Fossils of sea creatures can still be found within its rocks.
So, while you're exploring the reserve, you're literally walking through millions of years of geological history.
A Few Tips Before You Go
Hiking: A popular route around the mountain's lower slopes is approximately 8 km. Allow around 3–4 hours, depending on your pace and stops.
Where to start: The main entrances are near Cornino and Frassino.
Swimming: Bring your swimsuit! There are beautiful rocky spots along the coast, although access and sea conditions vary.
What to bring: Comfortable hiking shoes, drinking water, snacks, and sun protection.
Best time to visit: Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking, with much more comfortable temperatures.
Nearby attraction: Combine your trip with Grotta Mangiapane, a fascinating little village built inside a natural cave near Custonaci.
Why Is Monte Cofano Worth Visiting?
Unlike some of Sicily's more famous attractions, Monte Cofano offers something increasingly difficult to find — peace, wilderness, and spectacular coastal views without the crowds.
My advice? Don't rush. Enjoy the walk, discover the old watchtowers, take a break overlooking the sea, and let the scenery do the rest.
Sometimes Sicily's most unforgettable places are the ones that don't appear on every tourist's checklist.
