The Legend of Testa di Moro
If you've ever walked through the streets of Sicily, you've probably noticed those beautiful, colourful ceramic heads decorating balconies, terraces and doorways.
Some look like kings, others like queens. They're covered in crowns, flowers, jewels and beautiful hand-painted details.
Pretty, aren't they?
Well, what if I told you that behind these charming decorations lies a story involving love, betrayal, jealousy… and a rather creative way of dealing with an unfaithful boyfriend?
And believe me, this one doesn't end with a broken heart and a few angry messages.
It ends with a severed head.
With a strike of vengeance she claimed his head, turning it into a terracotta planter and sowing it with fragrant basil. Watered daily by her tears, the plant grew so magnificent that all Palermo began commissioning Moor’s head pots in clay.A beautiful girl in old Palermo
Our story takes us back many centuries, to the days when Sicily was under Arab rule.
Picture Palermo in those days.
Narrow streets winding between stone buildings, busy markets overflowing with spices and colourful fabrics, merchants shouting over one another, and the smell of freshly baked bread drifting through the warm Mediterranean air.
In the old district of Kalsa lived a beautiful young Sicilian woman.
Legend says she had delicate features, long dark hair and eyes as captivating as the sea surrounding her island.
She spent much of her time at home, looking after the flowers and herbs growing on her balcony.
And it wasn't just any balcony.
Imagine colourful flowers hanging over the stone railing, clay pots filled with fragrant herbs, and green leaves gently moving in the warm afternoon breeze.
It was her little paradise.
And she loved it.
But one day, while she was tending to her plants, something happened that would change her life forever.
A stranger beneath the balcony
A young Moorish man was walking through the narrow street below.
He was a handsome stranger, dressed in fine clothes, with dark eyes and the confident manner of someone accustomed to getting what he wanted.
As he passed beneath the balcony, he looked up.
And there she was.
The young woman, surrounded by flowers, with the afternoon sunlight falling across her face.
According to the legend, he fell in love immediately.
Now, whether it was true love or simply a very attractive woman standing on a balcony, I'll leave that for you to decide.
But one thing is certain.
He wanted to meet her.
And he wasn't exactly the shy type.
Soon enough, he approached her, declared his feelings and began trying to win her heart.
And apparently, he was rather good at it.
Because before long, the young woman fell deeply in love with him too.
A romance that seemed perfect
Days turned into weeks.
They spent time together, sharing stories, exchanging promises and dreaming about their future.
For the young woman, life had never seemed more beautiful.
Every morning she woke with a smile, looking forward to seeing him again. Even the flowers on her balcony seemed brighter.
She believed she had found the man she would spend the rest of her life with.
And he?
Well…
Let's just say he had forgotten to mention one rather important detail.
He already had a wife.
And children.
Back in his homeland, far to the east.
Oh, and one more thing.
He was planning to leave Sicily and return to them.
Quite an impressive collection of things to forget to mention to someone you're supposedly in love with, don't you think?
The terrible discovery
Eventually, the truth came out.
The young woman discovered that her beloved was not the man she thought he was.
There was another woman.
Another family.
Another life waiting for him across the sea.
And everything he had promised her suddenly seemed worthless.
Imagine the shock.
One moment, you're dreaming of spending your life with someone. The next, you discover that you've been nothing more than a temporary chapter in somebody else's story.
She was devastated.
Heartbroken.
Humiliated.
But sadness slowly turned into anger.
And anger turned into something much darker.
According to the legend, she could not accept the thought of him leaving her.
She wanted him to stay.
Forever.
And when I say forever…
Well, she meant it quite literally.

The neighbours become suspicious… well, sort of
People walking past the balcony couldn't help noticing the beautiful plant.
The neighbours were fascinated.
How was she growing basil so perfectly?
What was her secret?
Was it the sunlight? The soil? Some mysterious gardening technique?
Apparently, nobody thought to ask why her flowerpot looked suspiciously like a human head.
But they certainly wanted one for themselves.
And so the local craftsmen began producing ceramic pots shaped like the head of a Moorish man.
Beautiful, colourful, decorated with elaborate crowns, ornaments and intricate details.
Soon, these unusual flowerpots appeared on balconies all over Palermo.
And over time, they spread throughout Sicily.
And that, according to the legend, is how the famous Teste di Moro were born.
But why are they often displayed in pairs?
There's actually another version of the legend.
In this version, the young Sicilian woman came from a noble family, and her lover was a Moorish man whose relationship with her was considered unacceptable.
When the family discovered their secret romance, both lovers were condemned to death.
Their heads were displayed as a warning, and later became the inspiration for the two ceramic figures — a man and a woman.
A tragic love story, rather than a tale of revenge.
So depending on which version you hear, these famous ceramic heads represent either a love that turned deadly or two lovers whose relationship ended in tragedy.
Either way, not exactly a happy ending.
The next time you see a Testa di Moro…
Today, you can find these ceramic heads almost everywhere in Sicily.
On balconies, in gardens, outside restaurants, in souvenir shops and inside beautifully decorated homes.
Some are simple and elegant. Others are enormous, colourful and covered with intricate details.
They've become one of the island's most recognisable traditions.
And here's my favourite part.
Most tourists admire them, take a few photographs and maybe even buy a pair to take home.
Without having the slightest idea what the legend behind them actually says.
So next time you're walking through a little Sicilian street and notice a ceramic Moor's head filled with fresh basil, take a moment to remember this story.
Because behind that beautiful decoration lies a rather disturbing reminder.
Never underestimate a broken heart.
And perhaps, just to be safe, don't forget to mention if you're already married.
Especially in Sicily.

A night he would never forget
One night, while the young man was sleeping peacefully, the woman sat alone in the darkness.
Outside, Palermo had fallen silent.
The busy markets were empty. The streets were deserted, and the moon cast pale shadows across the stone walls.
She looked at the man sleeping beside her.
The man she had loved.
The man who had deceived her.
The man who would soon sail away and leave her behind.
And in that moment, she made her decision.
If he couldn't stay with her willingly, she would make sure he never left.
She waited until he was fast asleep.
Then she killed him.
And as if that weren't enough, she cut off his head.
Yes.
His head.
I suppose you could say she had some serious difficulties accepting the end of a relationship.
But here's where the story gets even stranger.
The most unusual flowerpot in Palermo
Now, most people would probably panic after doing something like that.
Our young Sicilian woman, however, had another idea.
Remember how much she loved her plants?
Well, she decided to combine her two great passions.
Her gardening.
And her boyfriend.
She took his severed head, hollowed it out and turned it into a flowerpot.
Then she filled it with soil, planted basil inside and placed it on her balcony.
Exactly where she used to stand when they first met.
Romantic?
Not particularly.
Memorable?
Absolutely.
According to the legend, the woman watered the basil with her tears, mourning the lover she had killed.
And something extraordinary happened.
The basil began to grow.
And grow.
Its leaves became incredibly green and healthy, and its fragrance filled the narrow street below.
Soon, it was the most magnificent basil plant in the entire neighbourhood.
