Discover Trapani's Old Town

Trapani Old Town – A Walk Through Centuries of History

Trapani's Old Town is the heart of the city, full of narrow streets, beautiful Baroque churches, historic palaces and charming little squares. It's the perfect place to wander without a plan, discover hidden corners and enjoy the authentic Sicilian atmosphere.

A Little History

Trapani's history goes back more than 2,000 years. Known to the ancient Greeks as Drepanon, meaning "sickle", the city takes its name from the curved shape of its coastline.

Over the centuries, Trapani was influenced by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spanish rulers. Each civilisation left its mark, creating the fascinating mixture of architecture and culture you can still see today.

What Should You See?

Start your walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele,
one of the most beautiful
streets in the historic centre. Admire
the elegant Cathedral of San Lorenzo,
discover the impressive Palazzo Senatorio and
don't miss the nearby astronomical clock dating back to 1596.

Then explore the smaller streets, stop for a coffee or traditional Sicilian pastry, and make your way towards the sea.

Did You Know?

According to an ancient Greek legend, Trapani was formed when the goddess Demeter dropped her sickle into the sea while searching for her kidnapped daughter, Persephone. The sickle-shaped coastline became the inspiration for the city's name.

Of course, it's only a legend – but it's a wonderful story to remember while walking through Trapani!
